2024 Obesity Prevalence for Cats, Dogs, and Horses

About the Survey

During World Pet Obesity Week in October, veterinary professionals are asked to collect weight and body condition scores to monitor the prevalence of obesity in dogs and cats. This year, the survey was also expanded to include data on equines.

The canine and feline survey will be available in English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish. The equine pilot survey is only available in English.

Data Collection: Participants are asked to report weight on animals seen during routine examinations on at least one full day, or more if scheduling permits.

Data collected will include: Age, breed, sex and reproductive status, weight, and Body Condition Score (BCS) based on a 9-point scale - 1 (very thin, emaciated) to 9 (obesity). Pet owners are asked to give an informal assessment of their pet's body condition. For horses and pnies, a Cresty Neck Score (0-5) is also requested.

Animal Criteria for Inclusion:

  • Dogs and cats must be at least one year of age and skeletally mature.

  • Equine must be at least two years of age and skeletally mature.

  • Only animals presenting for annual examinations, vaccinations, minor medical complaints, dentistry, boarding, and grooming are included. Animals seen for emergency and terminal conditions should be excluded.

Survey Period:
The survey opens on October 7, 2024, coinciding with World Pet Obesity Week, and will remain open until December 31, 2024.
